In conjunction with Music SA’s ‘Umbrella: Winter City Sounds’, ROOT DOWN will be a celebration of Hip Hop Roots & Soul Language. Bringing live hip-hop and exhibiting stories of the history, expression and true energy of Hip Hop, Funk and Soul. Featuring the magical Sampa The Great a few months after her explosive Adelaide debut at Womad, funk samurai Oisima, local beat songstress Abbey Howlett, plus heaps of local talent. These smooth cats will be joined by an exhibition of visual artists, screen-printing, vinyl, beat and break-dancing workshops and some great local beer and wine.

The idea is to create an historical journey through the influencers of early jazz, funk, disco and soul how these artists made such a vibration throughout the early days of Hip Hop world-wide and how this reverberates to this present day. Especially in our hometown, Adelaide, where the Hip Hop, Soul and Funk communities are more powerful than one would think. This celebration will have a focus on activating the streets during the winter months in Adelaide. So wear your best tracksuits and lets warm this festival up with some tight rhymes and fluid beats. Introducing the inaugural Root Down 2016.
